The University of Toronto’s New Music Festival is an annual event, and the most important of its kind in Canada. Each year, the Faculty of Music invites a major composer of international repute as the Roger D. Moore Distinguished Visitor in Composition. This year distinguished visitor is George Tsontakis, winner of the 2006 Charles Ives Living Composition Award. The New Music Festival runs from Jan 28th to Feb 2nd this year. Composers featured on Jan 31 include: Sean King, Fiona Ryan, Elisha Denburg, Lee Parkin, Avalon Rusk & Kevin Lau.

The Goldberg Experience is a live multimedia presentation of J.S. Bach’s – Goldberg Variations. You will experience the Goldberg Variations like never before. This presentation includes narration of the story of the Goldberg Variations, visual (still photos and video) depicting each variation and the aural sensations of this masterpiece, with music written especially for this project by the young Canadian Constantine Caravassilis.

The complete set of the Goldberg Variations to follow the presentation, with Ronald Hawkins on the piano.

Petra Steinert studied at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie (Netherlands) where she graduated in 1997. Since 1997 she has danced in and choreographed for numerous productions in Germany, Slovenia and The Netherlands. She is the co-founder of the dance company shot AG. From 1999 until 2005 she was head of the dance department of the Heinrich-Schütz-Konservatorium Dresden. She currently resides in Canada, and is a member of the Young Lungs Dance Exchange.

Bjørn Bantock – Conductor



Bjørn Bantock has studied conducting with Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, Peter Stark, and Clark Rundell at the Royal Northern College of Music. Bjørn has conducted concerts at St. Giles, the Barbican and Pond Square Highgate and was also invited to conduct the Philharmonisches Kammerorchestrer Berlin in 2005, The Northern Sinfonia, and has also collaborated with schools such as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Royal Northern College of Music and the London Contemporary Dance School.  He has been invited to conduct the orchestra of the Royal Conservatoire of Music Copenhagen and the 2007 Aberystwyth Music Festival, with David Campbell as soloist.

Bantock is also conductor and lecturer for the Oxford Cello School and the Alpine Cello Course in Geneva. He is the string coach for Capriccio, a string ensemble of the best players drawn from the North West of England and was recently invited to conduct and give a series of lectures for the Classical Live Exhibition at the London Olympia 2005.

Winner of the 2003 Contemporary Music Prize, Bantock is actively involved in the performance of contemporary music and recently participated in broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, performing works by James Macmillan. He has been published in the classical music magazine MUSO and enjoys a thriving teaching practice in London.

As a cellist Bjørn studied with Micu Szigeti, Magdalena Roux, Emma Ferrand and Gregor Horsh. He has won numerous prizes and bursaries including an International Associated Board Scholarship, finalist in the Oude Meester Music Prize, ATKV best string player award for three consecutive years and the Sir John Barbirolli Prize. Bjørn has performed as soloist with all the major South African Orchestras and also gives regular recitals with his duo partner Hanja Strydom. An active chamber musician, Bjørn has worked extensively with the Gregory String Quartet and the Amethyst Piano Trio.
